Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini: Which AI Should You Actually Use?

C

I get asked this constantly: which AI should I be using? Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini? The honest answer is that all three are genuinely good, and the right choice depends on what you need. Let me give you my actual take after using all three extensively.

Claude (Anthropic)

Claude is my daily driver, and has been for a while now. Its strengths are in writing, nuanced reasoning, and following complex instructions accurately. When I need to write something that sounds like a human being — a client proposal, a detailed explanation, a blog post — Claude consistently produces better first drafts than the alternatives. It’s also the most careful about not hallucinating when it’s uncertain, which matters when you’re relying on it for work.

Claude’s context window is large, making it excellent for long documents. If I need to feed in a 50-page contract and ask questions about it, Claude handles that gracefully. The main limitation is ecosystem — it doesn’t have the plugins and integrations that ChatGPT has built up.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

ChatGPT is still the most widely used AI assistant in the world, and there’s a reason for that. The ecosystem around it is exceptional — plugins, Custom GPTs, integrations with almost everything, and a massive community producing prompts and workflows. For coding tasks, GPT-4o remains extremely capable and the code interpreter feature (running Python live) is genuinely useful for data work.

If you’re a business that wants to build AI-powered workflows with the most integrations and the largest support community, ChatGPT is probably your starting point.

Gemini (Google)

Gemini has improved enormously over the past year. Its standout feature is Google Workspace integration — if your business runs on Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive, Gemini’s ability to pull context from those sources is genuinely powerful. Ask it to summarise your last 10 emails about a project and it can actually do that, which neither Claude nor ChatGPT can match natively.

For multimodal work — feeding in images, video, audio — Gemini is also very strong. Google’s infrastructure gives it advantages here.

My Recommendation

  • For writing, reasoning, long documents: Claude
  • For coding, integrations, data work: ChatGPT
  • For Google Workspace users, multimodal tasks: Gemini

Don’t be loyal to one tool. Use whichever fits the task. All three have free tiers worth exploring before you commit to paying for anything.
