Retro Gaming on a Budget: The Best Consoles to Start With Under $100

R

Retro gaming has a reputation for being expensive, and for some platforms that’s true. But there are still excellent options for under $100 AUD if you know where to look. Here’s where I’d start if budget was the primary constraint.

Original Game Boy (1989)

The original grey brick Game Boy is remarkably durable and still findable for $30–70 AUD. It plays the entire Game Boy library on four AA batteries that last 15+ hours. The screen is dim and greenish, but a backlight mod kit costs about $20 and transforms the experience. Start here for the lowest barrier to entry in retro handheld gaming.

Original PlayStation (1994)

The PS1 is one of the best value platforms in retro gaming. Units sell for $40–$80 AUD and the game library is enormous, with most titles still affordable. RPGs, fighters, platformers, survival horror — the PS1 library has it all. Install a PSIO or use a chip mod to load games from SD and you have access to the entire library without wearing out the laser.

Sega Mega Drive (1988)

PAL Mega Drive units are still common in Australia and often sell for $40–80 AUD complete with controllers. The game library has a strong local presence since the Mega Drive outsold the SNES in Australia. Sonic, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Mortal Kombat — great games at great prices.

Where to Buy

  • Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree — best prices, inspect before buying
  • Markets and op shops — inconsistent but occasionally excellent finds
  • Local retro game stores — more expensive but tested and usually honest about condition
  • eBay — convenient but prices are higher and fakes are more common

You don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy retro gaming. Start with one platform, learn it well, and expand from there. The $100 budget goes further than you’d think.
